Sowing the Seeds of Constructive Citizenship
Welcome to Sembrando El Futuro! Our organization is dedicated to helping young people learn self-sufficiency and determination while developing their creativity. Since our founding in a church basement in 1992, we’ve served thousands of children between the ages of 6 and 17 in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood with the help of community volunteers and the support of people like you.
Sembrando El Futuro literally means “sowing the future.” Our mission is to provide a safe place for children in our Humboldt Park neighborhood to receive supplementary afterschool educational programs, physical activities and recreation.
At Sembrando El Futuro (SELF), we believe in assisting local children using volunteers and resources from within the community. This has been a key to our success because the young people we serve see daily examples of how local resources can transform a community, and they experience positive mentoring from caring local adults.
Through the multiple programs at SELF, we assist between 200 and 225 children each year. The children are primarily Hispanic and African-American, and the overwhelming majority of them are from low-income households in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
This website will help you learn more about the programs we offer, the objectives of those programs and the ways you can help us fulfill our mission.
